Species of Spaces - Thursday 6th October

In today's lecture we looked at the development of the map over time with several artists own personal takes on the map. Through observation it is interesting to see how the map has changed from something that were once detailed pieces of art as shown in Jan Visscher's map of London, a panoramic view of the skyline illustrated in immense detail. However as the map has developed the simplicity of the map has increased, with simple lines and colours in today's culture used to represent different places. The video "A Power of Ten, a dealing with the relative size of things in the universe and the effect of adding a zero" was particularly effective in showing that maps with their ariel view offer a different perspective to things making something incredibly large to us, seem small on such a scale. This lecture was useful for looking into surroundings and the ways in which different formats allow people to explore their area.
